Becca On Squirrel Patrol

Becca seems to have inherited her mother's trait of being on constant "squirrel patrol". She's sure there is a squirrel in the yard somewhere by me just mentioning the "S" word as shown in this video (there really was no squirrel in the yard at the time of filming). In fact, after I downloaded the video to my computer and was playing it back, she heard "squirrel" from my computer; she then stood up in the bedroom and ran to the door and was starting whining as if to say "Let me at that dratted squirrel!!" She often bounds around the entire yard like a deer running through the forest and loves to stand on her hind legs, trying to climb up the tree to get that evil squirrel. When a squirrel is running along the top of my fence, she jumps along all the boards in the fence while racing at a rapid speed, trying to catch it. Heaven help us the day that she actually gets within striking distance of a squirrel!!

I do believe the racers would do better with a squirrel to run after on the track. It is a more likely catch in this day and age then a rabbit in the average yard.

My Dan has acctually caught two squirrels. Both times he cought them they froze between his feet and he just stood there waiting for the little thing to run again and start the game of chase all over again.

My girls are always on squirrel alert, too! Usually at the dog park we visit, where there are a lot of trees and have been several close calls. You'd think the squirrels would learn to stay out of certain areas!

Becca sure looks beautiful when she's on full alert, though!

So far Katie is my only squirrel catcher although its not from the others' lack of trying... Katie just got lucky when the dumb squirrel decided to jump out of the tree.

Oh my goodness, it must be inherited. Darby alerts and freezes at the word squirrel. If there's trees anywhere near, he looks up. We use that word in the showring, and he gives ears and freezes. I've tried other words, squirrel is the one that works. Weird.

We don't have squirrels but 'possum alert' is a big deal for our boy. Let alone when the occasion wallaby flies though our paddock !
