Celebrating Greyhounds

Welcome, new readers!

I am pleased to announce that the Aragongreyhounds blog was recently mentioned in the magazine "Celebrating Greyhounds". I am flattered that the blog was chosen to represent how smart, beautiful and talented greyhounds can be.

For new readers I, Helen, am the breeder of Aragon greyhounds. This blog, however, is actually written by several different people who each have a puppy from my last litter (Merlin X Lyric). Through reading our stories about training and competing with our hounds, we hope to provide motivation to readers.

We all would love to see more greyhounds and their owners enjoying the competitive sports!

Cool Coats

Years ago at a dog show I bought two shammy cool coats for the hot summer days. The coats stay cold for hours on the dogs and help keep them from overheating. They were expensive and the company stopped carrying them at the shows. Waiting for ringtime in the summer be it conformation, agility or obedience the dogs are definately more willing to work when they are not hot. I was bemoaning the fact the coats were no longer available to Bryn's mom Marie. She immediately said she could buy car shammies at Walmart for a fraction of the cost I spent on the orginal coats. A few other supplies, velcro and ribbon and in a short time she made Echo her own cool coat.

Coming home from work today it was 105 degrees at 5:30PM. Now I have three dogs, three coats and three happy dogs.
Thank you Marie, Bryn and Walmart.

California Fruit

One of the many nice things about living in California is the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. I have recently gotten into the habit of making fresh squeezed lemonade and freezing it, adding alittle fresh squeezed orange juice makes it sweeter. Then I use the frozen lemonade as ice blocks to keep dog treats and lunch cold. As it defrosts the juice is refreshingly cold. In addition to using my fruit trees(2 lemon trees, 1 orange tree, 1 grapefruit tree, 1 lime tree) my friends are recruited to bring their fruit. Fruit this size makes alot of juice! These are just average lemons out of a friends backyard-they were not given steroids. Texas has nothing on California fruit.

Snow Days

But it got here about midnight last night.....snow, and lots of it!!!! It took all night to deliver, but we woke up this morning at 7am to a Winter White Wonderland. Happy Birthday Stripey Boy, if a little belated!!!! I'm not a morning person, but this was too much to resist.

I quietly snuck out of the bedroom and made coffee, grabbed the camera and got Pre Greyhound Plowing photos. Then, almost on cue, the Birthday Boy was at the back door wondering where the MomLady is, and what the heck is all this white stuff?????!

One hour, 2 flash cards and 4 exhausted dogs later a fire was built in the fireplace and everyone curled up to dry out and take a morning nap. Darby will retrieve ANYTHING, snowballs included. Throw it out, chase it down, bring it back, please throw it again! He's just very delicate with the snowballs, they break easy you know!
